NEW DELHI — A bomb exploded Wednesday in a predominantly Muslim shopping bazaar in the city of Meerut, about 40 miles northeast of New Dehli, killing five people and injuring about 10 others, police said.
Authorities said that two of the injured included two paramilitary personnel and that there were no claims of responsibility.
An indefinite, round-the-clock curfew was immediately imposed in the city to avert a flare-up of ethnic violence. A night curfew has been enforced in the city since May, when Meerut was rocked by two weeks of rioting between Muslims and Hindus in which 107 people died, according to officials.
