U.S. Olympic Festival : Anderson Swims to Two More Golds

Sarah Anderson swam to two gold medals for the second consecutive night, and Chas Morton, winner of the first gold medal in the U.S. Olympic Festival, scored his second victory in near-record time Wednesday.

Anderson, 17, of Moreno Valley, Calif., took the women’s 800-meter freestyle in 8 minutes 46.26 seconds and anchored the North A team to victory in the 400-meter freestyle relay in 3:56.21.

Morton, 16, of Franklin, Tenn., won the men’s 400-meter individual medley in a career-best of 4:29.21, only .06 of a second off the Festival record of 4:29.15, set by Roger Van Jouanne in 1982.

In the wrestling competition, John Smith, his hand bandaged to protect broken bones and his ribs taped to hold up torn cartilage, ran his winning streak to 52 and advanced to the freestyle finals. Smith, seeded fourth and wrestling in the 136.5-pound class, defeated Glenn Goodman, 8-3 and 4-3.
