Japanese Buddhists to Mark Obon

Share

Obon, a Japanese Buddhist holiday in remembrance of the dead, will be observed this weekend by the Orange County Buddhist Church, 909 S. Dale St., Anaheim. A bazaar and carnival--featuring games, crafts and fresh produce for sale--will be held from 2 to 10 p.m. today and from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Odori, a traditional Obon dance expressing joy for the salvation offered by the Buddha, will be performed at 7 both nights. The dance, which originated in rural Japan, depicts villagers such as fishermen, coal miners and farmers at work.

The Hondo, or sanctuary, will be open to visitors, and temple members will be on hand to answer questions about Buddhism.
