President Reagan’s standing with the American people appears to have been largely unaffected by Lt. Col. Oliver L. North’s testimony last week at the congressional Iran- contra hearings. According to a nationwide Gallup Poll, Reagan’s job performance rating is 51% approval, about the same as in surveys conducted since December--with the exception of a post-Tower Commission report poll, in which it plunged to 40% approval. His personal appeal is undiminished, with roughly three-fourths of the public still expressing approval of Reagan, the man.
