American Motors posted earnings of $30.2 million for the second quarter, compared to a loss of $52 million in the year-ago period. The Detroit car maker, target of a Chrysler Corp. acquisition bid, said the profit is the result of strong worldwide Jeep sales, a richer product mix, improved operating margins, higher utilization of manufacturing capacity and continued improvement in manufacturing efficiencies. The quarter’s gain will not affect Chrysler’s planned $830-million acquisition of AMC, the company said.
