Former Presidents Richard M. Nixon and Gerald R. Ford paid tribute to the late Arthur F. Burns, the former Federal Reserve Board chairman, remembering him for his economic wisdom, analytical intellect and moral inspiration. “The mind of Dr. Burns was truly one of God’s masterpieces,” Ford told about 300 gathered at the Adas Israel Synagogue in Washington for the memorial service. Also praising Burns were Secretary of State George P. Shultz, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Paul A. Volcker, Sen. Pete V. Domenici (R-N.M.) and economist Milton Friedman. Burns died June 26 of coronary disease complicated by a stroke.
