More than one in 200 women seeking marriage licenses in the San Francisco Bay Area are infected with the AIDS virus, providing yet another sign that the threat of AIDS to heterosexuals should not be taken lightly, according to officials of the California Department of Health Services and U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Recent reports have suggested that the threat of AIDS to heterosexuals has been exaggerated, but “that threat is very real,” said Corinna Del Tempelis, of the Alameda County Department of Health Services.

As of July 20, the Centers for Disease Control reported that 38,808 people had developed AIDS and 22,328 had died. Of these, only 1,484 cases, or 4% of the total, were believed to be heterosexually transmitted.
