BACH: PRELUDE AND FUGUE IN A MINOR,...
BACH: PRELUDE AND FUGUE IN A MINOR, BWV 894; CHROMATIC FANTASY AND FUGUE, BWV 903; CAPRICCIO IN B-FLAT, BWV 992; FANTASY AND RICERCARE IN C MINOR, BWV 906 and 1079; OTHER WORKS. John Gibbons, harpsichord. Elektra/Nonesuch digital 9-79132-1. Gibbons is a hybrid, bringing together the gusto of Wanda Landowska (in a richly resonant recording) and the performance practice of a modern musicologist. The dynamism and sensitivity of three performances, on an instrument modeled on one from the 18th Century, are exceptional, the articulation immaculate. By subtly manipulating rhythms and tempos Gibbons even creates the impression of melodic swell, of crescendos and diminuendos.
