Sepulveda Tunnel Traffic Study OKd

The Manhattan Beach City Council agreed to allocate $25,000 during the next two years to participate in a study of traffic problems in the Sepulveda Boulevard airport tunnel. The allocation is contingent on participation of other local cities, including El Segundo, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach.
The unanimous action was taken at the request of the El Segundo Employers Assn., which cited a 1985 report concluding that completion of the Century Freeway in 1991 will result in severe congestion in the airport tunnel during peak hours. The preliminary study indicated that by 1993 the northbound lanes will be particularly congested, with traffic backing up through the intersection at Imperial Highway.
The new study will analyze several alternatives, including expansion of the tunnel or construction of a new one, according to Donald H. Camph, executive director of the employers group.
