Fountain Valley : Hospital Guild Gives 51 Scholarships to Students

The Fountain Valley Regional Hospital Guild has awarded 51 college students $35,000 in scholarship money, the most the organization has granted in a single year.

The recipients, all from Orange County, are pursuing careers in such health-related fields as nursing, dentistry and optometry, said Gladys Tweedle, president of the guild. Many scholarship recipients are hospital employees or performed volunteer work at the hospital, she said.

“They’re so encouraging for the future,” Tweedle said. “I feel like we have good health care now, but these kids that are attending school now are coming up with brilliant ideas. I feel like they’re really going to make a dent in the health care field and it’s going to be better than ever.”

Awards ranging from $500 to $2,000 were based on merit, need and an interview, Tweedle said.

The scholarship fund was created from profits from the hospital’s guild-run gift shop, the sale of baby pictures to parents and a few private donations, she said.
