Boz Wants to Share the Wealth

The Nordstrom family, principal owners of the Seattle Seahawks, have been called upon to open up their pocketbook.

The call was made by Brian Bosworth, who told a Seattle reporter: “I drove by one of the Nordstrom stores in Beverly Hills last week, so I know they can’t be hurting. Knock on their door and tell them to dust off the safety deposit box.”

Bosworth, selected by Seattle in the supplemental draft, has been doing some film work while dickering with the Seahawks. It figures that Boz and Hollywood would hit it off handsomely, but he said he tired of the scene.

“I’m frustrated to the max,” he said. “I haven’t hit anybody since Nov. 23, I’ve got it down to the day. I need to put on the pads and get after it.”

Would he like to play for the Raiders?

“Sure I would,” he said, “but I’d get off just as much knocking the bleep out of them, too. I’ve always enjoyed playing with the best and against the best. I’d like to play with Marcus Allen but I’d also like to break his little body in two.”

Did you see Joe Garagiola putting the needle to Tom Lasorda on that postgame interview Saturday? It’s not the first time Garagiola has accused the Dodger manager of embellishment.

He once said, “You can plant two thousand rows of corn with the fertilizer Lasorda spreads around.”

Trivia Time: Among managers who have managed at least 10 years in the major leagues, who is the only one in history never to have a losing season? (Answer below.)

Rick Sutcliffe told The Sporting News he can’t understand why Pedro Guerrero tried to show him up with all that posturing after hitting a home run off him at Wrigley Field.

“The thing that gets me mad is that Pete and I used to be good friends in the minor leagues. In 1977 at Albuquerque, when he didn’t have any money, I used to loan him money. I used to loan him my car, too.

“He used to ride around town in my car, and that’s how he met his wife, for goodness sake. For a friend to embarrass me like that, maybe I’d better re-examine just how good a friend he is.”

57 Years Ago Today: On July 26, 1930, Hack Wilson hit three home runs as the Chicago Cubs routed the Philadelphia Phillies, 16-2. Wilson would finish with 56 home runs, still the National League record.

Tampa Bay Coach Ray Perkins, on rookie quarterback Vinny Testaverde: “What I see in Vinny is a 6-foot 5-inch Joe Namath. He’s just like Joe in his delivery, his arm motion and his set. And he has excellent feet, which Joe also had.”

Perkins was Namath’s favorite receiver at the University of Alabama.

It’s not a forgettable quote yet, but it could be before the day is over. Said John McEnroe before the United States and West Germany squared off in the Davis Cup: “We should beat these guys. No question, we should win. The worst I can see is us winning, 3-2.”

Trivia Answer: Joe McCarthy (Chicago Cubs, 1926-30; New York Yankees, 1931-46; Boston Red Sox, 1948-50).

Note: Earl Weaver, who had 15 winning seasons at Baltimore before retiring, came out of retirement and endured his first losing season last year.

Buddy Martin of the Denver Post: “Why do I think Brian Bosworth is going to wind up in the desert pondering cactus flowers, like Joe Don Looney?”
