One of Delta Jet’s 4 Engines Fails; Plane Returns Safely to Las Vegas
A Delta Airlines DC-8 carrying 175 passengers and crew en route to Atlanta returned to Las Vegas shortly after takeoff Thursday when one of its four engines failed, officials said.
Delta spokesman Bill Berry said the pilot decided to return to McCarran International Airport when the engine shut down, even though DC-8s can fly with only two engines operating. No injuries were reported.
A McCarran spokesman said Delta Flight 750 returned to the airport seven minutes after its 9:30 a.m. takeoff. Fire trucks and emergency units lined the runway as a precautionary measure as the aircraft landed safely.
Berry said mechanics were trying to determine why the engine on the left wing closest to the fuselage shut down.
He said passengers were rerouted to other Delta flights.
The incident was the latest in a series of mechanical problems, pilot errors and near-misses that have plagued Delta over the last month.
