Developers Allred, Collins Buy Kearny Mesa Tract From Navy

A joint venture of San Diego-based developers Douglas Allred Co. and Collins Development Co. has purchased a 154-acre Kearny Mesa land parcel from the Navy, outbidding nine other developers at an auction this week conducted by the General Services Administration.

Allred Co. principal Douglas Allred said Friday that commercial and industrial development of the parcel south of the Miramar Naval Air Station may begin before the end of this year. But Allred declined to estimate the total square footage of buildings that the parcel may someday include, saying the parcel still lacked certain planning approvals.

A small portion of the parcel bounded by Highway 52 on the north, Interstate 805 to the west and Convoy Street to the east was formerly a sanitary landfill that was closed in the early 1970s. The proposed site for the SANDER trash-to-energy generation plant is just east of the parcel.

The Navy decided to sell the parcel after the recently completed extension of Highway 52 separated the parcel from the Naval Air Station, a GSA spokeswoman said.
