San Diego County Open Golf : Hart and Wilson Lead at 13-under

Jeff Hart and Jeff Wilson are the co-leaders after the second round of the San Diego County Open golf tournament Friday at the Cottonwood Country Club. Hart shot a six-under-par 65 and Wilson a seven-under 64 on the Monte Vista course to share the two-day lead at 13-under 132.

First-round leader Bobby Johnson, who didn’t know he was the tournament leader until he woke up Friday morning, fell eight shots off the lead after shooting a 76 on the Ivanhoe course.

Johnson had built his lead on the 64 he shot Thursday on the Monte Vista course. The Monte Vista is the easier of the two courses being played here.

“I was very relaxed all day (after the first round),” said Johnson, a five-year pro from Palm Desert. “I even went out and did some surfing. But, once I found out I was leading, I definitely got nervous.

“I’d never led any tournament at any time ever before. It’s not easy. I had television cameras out there following me and I ended up bogeying two of the first four holes. I kept trying to get comfortable, but I was having trouble.”

Hart and Wilson, who both left the golf course quickly after finishing their rounds, may have trouble feeling comfortable as today’s third round unfolds. Just one stroke behind the two leaders is Lon Hinkle, a long-hitting veteran of the PGA Tour.

Hinkle shot a 66 at Monte Vista Friday after an opening-round 67.

Seven other players are two shots back at 134, and five more are at 135. Included in that group is Lennie Clements, who was among the leaders during the U.S. Open in San Francisco.

The players continued to hold the upper hand on the courses. The two-day cut was made at a five-under 140.

After the third round, the field will be cut to 48 golfers for the final round Sunday at Ivanhoe.
