Regarding “Think Twice About Limiting Growth” (July 26).

Kim Kilkenny’s tired philosophies will be summarily dismissed by a discerning, wary and cynical public that is gagging on the same old baloney sandwich. Mr. Kilkenny is a familiar figure at our council meetings, along with others of the pin-stripe set who buzz around City Hall like bees in search of the hive. Until he has something really new to offer, he might just as well take a hike.

The Construction Industry Federation (CIF) could better spend its time and money creating fresher, more innovative and more imaginative approaches to a mutual problem. Reasonable citizens agree that “no growth” is nonsense, but “slower growth” can make good sense--and good business--when combined with intelligent planning.

The CIF might start by getting input from residents of neighborhoods closest to undeveloped land. They know best what they can accept, and they will be fair. The La Costa Ranch Co. is reportedly preparing to take steps in this direction. If its motives are sincere, this will be a great leap forward and will give Mr. Kilkenny something more productive to write and talk about. At last.
