Pointing to a four-fold increase in narcotics-related deaths and complaints by public housing project tenants terrorized by drug dealers, San Francisco city officials have announced a task force crackdown on “crack” cocaine and other popular drugs.

“I would like to issue one warning to drug peddlers: Get out while you can. It is going to get tougher and tougher to sell drugs in San Francisco,” said Mayor Dianne Feinstein in a prepared statement.

The task force is targeting five public housing projects where drug trafficking has reached epidemic proportions. The mayor said the plan will use $836,000 transferred from an airport police fund that was obtained through the Federal Assets Seizure law.

U.S. Atty. Joseph Russoniello said the task force of city, state and federal agents will review drug cases to see which qualify for federal prosecution because of a narcotics distribution plan or other criteria.
