Trains to Las Vegas
In “Las Vegas Building Boom Defies Doom Predictions” (June 28) Times staff writer Don G. Campbell asked Steve Wynn, the owner of the Golden Nugget, why Vegas is booming.
I could hardly believe the interviewer or the host of people quoted in the article, including Mr. Wynn, failing to mention how prominently Southern California figures in Vegas’ future growth and development.
Just a few weeks ago, Nevada interests persuaded a fact-finding committee in Sacramento to recommend to the California Legislature that a high-speed train was feasible to be built between Las Vegas and Ontario. But strangely, the report did mention that there was no economic benefit to California.
If our legislators give their approval to the project, to be funded solely by a consortium of Nevada people, I think Californians ought to rise up in arms and do several things:
1--Demand that California legalize gambling before Las Vegas drains us.
2--Have a grand jury investigate our governing body to see if they were unduly influenced by the “bullet train” proponents.
3--Demand that our legislators go to Vacaville to have their heads examined.
