Racing at Del Mar : Short Sleeves and Miss Alto Score Osunitas Wins
Favorite Short Sleeves and longshot Miss Alto won their divisions of the Osunitas Handicap for fillies and mares Saturday at Del Mar.
Short Sleeves, a 5-2 choice ridden by Pat Valenzuela, won the first division by 2 3/4 lengths over Securencia, ridden by Laffit Pincay. Phylella was third under Bill Shoemaker.
Miss Alto, a 10-1 shot ridden by Gary Baze, took the second division by a head over Our Lutka, ridden by Luis Ortega. Sporting Ack, ridden by Valenzuela, finished third.
Both winners carried 117 pounds and earned $26,250.
Short Sleeves raced 1 1/16 miles in 1:42 3/5 and paid $7.20, $4.20 and $3.20. Miss Alto covered the same distance in 1:44 and paid $22.40, $8.60 and $8.20. In the first division, Short Sleeves drove between horses entering the stretch, opened a clear advantage with a furlong to go and gradually pulled away.
Miss Alto rallied from last, moved up four-wide into the stretch to a short lead in the deep stretch and held off Our Lutka.
