Winston H. (Tony) Cox, 47, has been named chairman and chief executive of Showtime/The Movie Channel Inc., a subsidiary of New York-based Viacom Inc. Cox will report to Frank Biondi Jr., Viacom president and chief executive.

Cox had been with Time Inc. since 1965, most recently as vice president-corporate planning. Before moving to the corporate post in 1984, Cox was president of HBO Network Group of Home Box Office Inc., Time’s pay-TV subsidiary.

Cox’s appointment reunites him with Biondi, former HBO president and chief executive, who last month assumed Viacom’s top post.

Upon his appointment, Biondi said his first order of business would be to name a new president of Showtime/The Movie Channel, the pay-TV movie service facing highly publicized problems in its rivalry with HBO.

In a statement, Cox said the “exciting prospect of working once again with Frank is heightened by being part of the new Viacom team.”
