A man was taken into custody Wednesday night for questioning after a high-speed chase that began on the San Bernardino Freeway and ended when a neighborhood near downtown was sealed off and a six-block area searched by police and canine teams.

The man, who refused to identify himself and carried no identification, was arrested in the basement of a house after tear gas was fired, said California Highway Patrol Officer Monty Keifer.

Ignored Red Lights

CHP Lt. Arnie Schwartz said motorcycle patrolman Stephen M. Miller first spotted the car speeding at 95 m.p.h. west on the freeway and gave chase. The driver hit speeds of 85 to 90 m.p.h. through several intersections, ignoring red lights and roaring through the 3rd Street tunnel.

The driver reportedly jumped out of his car in the 200 block of South Reno Street in the Rampart area and ran into an alley, where he allegedly pointed a handgun at Miller, but did not fire. The officer fired one shot, but missed as the man vanished over a fence.
