Malibu : Man Gets Conservation Award

Share

Giles Manwaring, a contractor who helped document the presence of steelhead trout in Malibu Creek, has received the National Conservation Award from the Izaak Walton League of America.

The league, which is dedicated to preserving the outdoors, made the presentation to Manwaring at its national convention in St. Paul, Minn.

Steelhead trout were believed to have died out in Southern California. Manwaring supervised volunteers searching the creek for steelhead, which migrate between the sea and fresh water and grow to more than twice the size of ordinary trout.

He also worked on a report that persuaded state Department of Fish and Game officials to ban fishing in the creek six months out of the year to allow the steelhead population to grow. Manwaring and others are continuing to study the creek.
