The U.S. Olympic Committee today volunteered to move about 300 of its athletes and officials out of the Pan American Games athletes’ village to ease overcrowding there.

“If anyone has to stay out of the village and give up our beds, it will be us as the host team,” Robert Helmick, president of the USOC, told delegates from the Pan Am countries. “We are prepared to move out of the village to make room for you.” As many as 1,000 more athletes than originally were expected may show up for the games which start Saturday.
