Orange County Roundup : Water Polo Team to Play Australia in Pan Am Tuneups

The U.S. water polo team will play the Australian national team in a series of matches that begin Sunday at 5 p.m. at Newport Harbor High School.

There will be a second match the next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Newport Harbor and a final match Wednesday at 7:30 at UC San Diego.

Admission to the events is $4 for adults.

The series provides a final tuneup for the U.S. team before the Pan American games. The U.S. team is coached by Bill Barnett, who is also the water polo coach at Newport Harbor High.

Barnett said the Australians will be in California until Aug. 16, and will work out with the U.S. team between matches.

Around the Area Troy Barnhart, the No. 7 hitter in the Orange Empire Conference last season, has signed a letter of intent to play for Chapman College in 1988. Barnhart hit .400 with 27 RBIs and 50 walks in 35 games for Rancho Santiago in 1987. In 20 conference games he batted .420. . . . Head coaches Lisle Lloyd and Gary Haning announced the signing of two Orange County products for Chapman’s softball team: infielder Brenda Cornelison from San Clemente High and pitcher Jacki Blake from Fountain Valley High. . . . John Hancock, a former All-America player and member of the Panthers’ 1985 NCAA Division II national championship team, has been named head coach of the Chapman women’s tennis squad. Hancock, 26, takes over for Janet Todd, the Panthers’ coach for their first two varsity seasons. Chapman finished 2-14 this past season. . . . Dave Williams and Monte Mahan, representing the Irvine Police Department, fared well earlier this week in the World International Police and Firemen Olympic Games in San Diego. Williams shot a 54-hole score of 221 to win individual honors in a field of 550 golfers who competed at Torrey Pines and Carmel Mountain. Williams and Mahan combined to shoot a 202 to win team honors. . . . The Des Flood Shooting Camp will be held Aug. 10-14 at Marinovich’s Advanced Athletic Research, 23151 Alcalde St., Building A, in Irvine. Fee for the camp is $100.
