San Pedro : Panel on Recreation Urged

Share

A citizens group trying to decide what should be done with White Point Park has called on Los Angeles city officials to set up a separate panel to look into the recreational needs of youth in the harbor area.

The White Point Citizens Advisory Committee sent a letter to Mayor Tom Bradley and harbor-area Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores calling for the creation of the task force, which it says should consist of officials from Los Angeles, Rancho Palos Verdes, Lomita, local school districts, the military and youth groups.

“Factors such as growing development from both civilian and military housing projects in the harbor area, increased pressure on existing undeveloped land space for different land uses, the existence of the latchkey issue for many children, the fact that different community organizations focusing on youth programs do not have adequate liaison between each other, and the fact that several governmental entities have a vital interest in youth recreation, have led to our committee recommending that you consider taking the lead in addressing this major concern,” the letter states.

Flores favors the idea of creating a committee, an aide said, adding that it should be discussed at a public hearing on White Point scheduled for October.
