The Region : Slumlord’s 30-Day House Arrest Ends

Share

Convicted slumlord Milton Avol, the Beverly Hills neurosurgeon who wore an electronic leash on his ankle while serving a 30-day sentence in one of his rundown buildings, was free to leave but refused to come out until the media left. About 40 reporters, photographers and cameramen stood outside Avol’s rodent-infested apartment building, awaiting the doctor. Avol, 63, called the “most recalcitrant slumlord in Los Angeles,” was free to leave the building at 1660 N. Western Ave. but refused, asking police instead to remove the news media. “This is private property,” Lt. Sergio Robleto told reporters. “He (Avol) said he wants people who don’t belong in his property to get off, or he’ll have them arrested for trespassing.” Police allowed the media people to remain on the sidewalk. A Municipal Court judge imposed the unusual house arrest on Avol for violating city building codes by repeatedly failing to clean up an apartment complex on South Main Street, which Avol has sold.
