The head of a jail in Colombia’s main port of Barranquilla is recruiting 50 cats to chase rats who are attacking the prison’s 52 inmates, the daily El Mundo reported Thursday.

The newspaper said prisoners had to arm themselves with clubs or cling to the cells’ bars to escape the rats’ bites at night.

Prison director Jesus Montano Olivo appealed to town residents to give him 50 cats, arguing that they will not cost taxpayer’s any money, since they will feed on the rats.
