Martin Lovett, cellist of the Amadeus String Quartet, said Sunday the quartet will have to disband following the death of its violist Peter Shidlof on Saturday. “There is no repertoire for two violins and a cello,” Lovett said Sunday. “However, I am sure we will carry on teaching,” he said. Shidlof, like the quartet’s two violinists Nissel and Norbert Brainin, was an Austrian Jew who escaped from the Nazis in 1938. The three met in British internment camps and the quartet was formed in 1948 after they met Lovett. The Amadeus, which had had no personnel changes since its formation, gave more than 4,000 concerts around the world and sold millions of records.
