Jan van Eck, a leading white South African lawmaker, quit the anti-apartheid Progressive Federal Party, saying it has not taken a strong enough stand against government actions to clamp down on dissent. Van Eck, head of the party’s unrest monitoring committee and a member of the policy-making Federal Council, said he will remain in Parliament as an independent. He charged that the party is so “scared of alienating further any white voters” that it is unwilling to take a bold lead.
