The JVC Jazz Festival, a two-day sellout for the first time since the music marathon returned to Newport, R.I., in 1981, concluded Sunday with a dynamic program headlined by all-star trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and guitarist George Benson. Organizers said the successor to the old Newport Jazz Festival was the best overall program since the event returned to the seaport, minus the raucous crowds that brought the old festival headaches in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. The festival’s average daily attendance this year was 7,500.
