An Oakland nurse who hiked 134 miles across Death Valley to raise money to fight AIDS said her feet hurt, but she hopes her trek helped generate increased awareness of the deadly disease. Patty Rose, 35, an Oakland resident and a nurse in the AIDS ward of San Leandro’s Fairmont Hospital, asked that contributions be sent to the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and East Bay Assistance Fund. She said she doesn’t know how much money has been donated so far. “My feet hurt terribly,” she said, “but they’re OK. Surprisingly, I only used one pair of tennis shoes.” She lost 10 pounds, twisted an ankle, got leg cramps and was beset by 50-m.p.h. winds.
