The University of Oklahoma, which has lost two games in the last two seasons, was named the nation’s No. 1 college football team in the United Press International Board of Coaches’ preseason poll. The Sooners have been named UPI’s preseason No. 1 team three straight years.
Nebraska was No. 2 and was the only other school named on all 50 coaches’ ballots. The rest of the Top 10 was No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 UCLA, No. 5 Auburn, No. 6 Michigan, No. 7 Penn State, No. 8 Arizona, No. 9 Miami and a tie for No. 10 between Texas A&M; and LSU. Washington, expected to be a contender for the Pacific 10 championship, was ranked No. 15.
Both UCLA Coach Terry Donahue and USC Coach Larry Smith are members of the UPI board.
