North Korean security forces opened fire on rioting workers last May Day, killing about 10 people and wounding about 30 others, a Seoul news agency reported Wednesday.

The agency attributed its report to an unidentified “foreign source” who recently visited Communist North Korea.

Naewoe News, a government-controlled news agency specializing in North Korean affairs, reported that the clash broke out in Pyongyang, the capital, during a celebration of the international labor day on the night of May 1.

Those killed or injured were among a group of workers mobilized for a redevelopment project under way in Pyongyang, the agency said.

The workers, apparently discontented with hard labor, rioted, throwing rocks at security officers, Naewoe said. The security officers opened fire as the riot spread, it said.
