San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Navy for home-porting the battleship Missouri in San Francisco Bay, ending 18 months of debate over the issue. The mayor and Rear Adm. Robert Toney, commander of the already formidable Navy flotilla in the bay, were all smiles as they signed the agreement that had been threatened by concerns about the ship’s nuclear capability, environmental issues and the Navy’s hiring practices. The battleship--now based in Long Beach--would reportedly create 1,886 new jobs in the Bay Area and add $96.7 million to the area’s military payroll.
