Prisoners taken from Orange County jails to courtroom hearings were arriving up to three hours late as a work slowdown by sheriff’s deputies continued. The deputies’ union, fighting for higher wages, expanded the 3-day-old slowdown by involving about 160 deputies from the Central Jail in time-consuming, by-the-book work routines. Several court administrators said prisoners arrived as late as 11:30 a.m. Meanwhile, more than 150 county employees from another union, the Service Employees International Union, called in sick. Supervisors were repairing and servicing county vehicles and operating the landfills because of that action.
