A 23-year-old Newport Beach man turned himself in to the California Highway Patrol Friday, saying he was the hit-and-run driver who struck a Huntington Beach police officer Thursday night.
The suspect, identified as James E. Maxwell, was arrested on a felony hit-and-run charge. Maxwell said he was driving on Pacific Coast Highway near Golden West Street about 9:15 p.m. Thursday when he struck Huntington Beach motorcycle officer Steve Brinkerhoff, who was standing at side of the road issuing a traffic ticket to another motorist, a CHP spokeswoman said.
Brinkerhoff was in serious condition Friday, according to a spokeswoman at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital Medical Center, with multiple abrasions and bruises.
Huntington Beach police said the victim is being checked for possible internal injuries.
