Milt Thompson hit a high chopper to score Ron Roenicke from third base with none out in the 11th inning to give the Philadelphia Phillies a 2-1 victory over the Dodgers in the first game of a Friday doubleheader.

Roenicke led off the 11th with an infield single off Matt Young, 5-7, and Juan Samuel doubled to right to put men on second and third. Catcher Mike Scioscia fielded Thompson’s chopper in front of home plate and tried to tag Roenicke, but Roenicke evaded him and slid home with the winning run.

The hit made a winner of Kent Tekulve (6-4), who pitched two innings of hitless relief.

The Phillies had tied the score 1-1 in the third when Mike Schmidt’s groundout with the bases loaded scored starter Kevin Gross, who had singled off Los Angeles starter Bob Welch to begin the inning.

Los Angeles took a 1-0 lead in the second. John Shelby doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. After Ken Landreaux walked, Tracy Woodson grounded to third. Landreaux was forced at second but Woodson beat the throw to first as Shelby scored.

The Phillies stranded 11 runners in the first seven innings and left the bases loaded in the fourth when Thompson grounded into a fielder’s choice.

Gross allowed 6 hits and 1 run in 8 innings. The right-hander was making his third appearance since umpires ejected him Aug. 10 for having sandpaper attached to his glove. Gross is appealing a 10-day suspension and the National League will conduct a hearing on his case Aug. 27.

Welch allowed 7 hits and 1 run in 7 innings. He walked five and struck out four.
