Doctors have determined that the growth in New York Giants right tackle Karl Nelson’s chest is malignant, according to a newspaper report, which is being denied by team officials.

The Asbury Park (N.J.) Press, quoting unnamed players, said the biopsy performed Thursday at the Hospital for Special Surgery-Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan had shown the growth to be potentially dangerous for Nelson.

But Giant General Manager George Young said Friday night that results from the biopsy were still being analyzed and “we’ll know all the ramifications on Monday.”

“I heard those rumors at camp, too,” he said, referring to the report of the malignancy. “But I think I should know the truth. I tend to run the team.”

Teammates told the newspaper that doctors, in order to remove a sample of the growth for the biopsy, had to open a horizontal incision several inches across Nelson’s chest and break several bones.

Nelson was resting at the hospital Friday night. When reached by telephone in his hospital room, he said, “I’m not saying anything.” Nelson spoke in a loud, clear voice.

Hospital officials refused to comment.
