Share

Gunmen entered a La Jolla jewelry store Saturday morning, smashed a display case and fled with a “large amount” of jewels, watches and other items, police said.

Police could not place a value on the stolen merchandise. No one was injured.

San Diego police believe the same group is responsible for a series of similar robberies throughout Southern California. Police could not immediately say how may other heists may be attributable to the group.

San Diego police provided this account:

The five suspects entered Slavick’s Jewelers in the bustling University Town Center shopping center on La Jolla Village Drive at 10:45 a.m. Three were armed with handguns and a fourth brandished a shotgun.

While one man smashed display cases, another grabbed merchandise and placed it in athletic bags that the other men were carrying. The men also took a weapon from a security guard.

The men fled in a stolen vehicle, which was later recovered on Cargill Avenue. After abandoning the first vehicle, the men entered two smaller cars and escaped.

A Slavick’s employee, reached by telephone, said company officials would not comment on the case.
