Sewage Overflows Into Mission Bay

Share

About 150 gallons of raw sewage overflowed from a manhole into Mission Bay on Friday evening, prompting health authorities to post warning signs along a small portion of the bay.

The spill, considered minor, occurred about 8 p.m. after a sewage pipe became blocked, causing the wastes to overflow from a manhole at Mission Boulevard and Brighton Court, according to Tom Gallagher, a hazardous-materials specialist with the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health Services.

Once the spill was noticed, Gallagher said, San Diego city work crews responded and cleared the blockage. Warning signs were posted along a 300-yard section of the bay next to where the sewage had entered, the official added.
