Arab League Warns Iran
Arab League nations, ending a special three-day meeting on the Iran-Iraq War, today warned Iran that unless it agrees to a U.N. cease-fire call by Sept. 20 they will reconsider their relationship with Tehran.
League foreign ministers, representing 21 Arab nations and the Palestine Liberation Organization, also supported Kuwait’s decision to re-register 11 of its oil tankers under the American flag and accept U.S. naval escorts in the Persian Gulf. Arab diplomats described the statement as a compromise between the call by Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and their gulf allies for an immediate break in Arab diplomatic ties with Iran and the softer approach recommended by Syria, Algeria, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
