Lendl Gets Sweep but No Shutout
Ivan Lendl, warming up for defense of his U.S. Open championship next week, crushed Jay Berger, 6-0, 6-2, Wednesday night in the first round of the $150,000 Hamlet Challenge Cup tennis tournament.
Lendl, seeking his fourth consecutive Hamlet title, needed 79 minutes to beat the 20-year-old Berger, whose baseline ground strokes extended the world’s top-ranked player through numerous points.
Lendl won the first nine games of the match, with Berger reaching game point only once--in a 14-point fourth game of the first set.
