Three environmental groups filed a lawsuit that seeks to invalidate a decision by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors supporting the basing of the battleship Missouri at Hunters Point. The suit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, alleges that the Board of Supervisors and Mayor Dianne Feinstein violated state law by authorizing a memorandum of understanding on the Navy’s plans without an environmental impact report. The suit was filed by San Francisco Tomorrow, Citizens for a Better Environment, Arms Control Research Center and several city residents. Jack Morrison, president of San Francisco Tomorrow, said that if the city wants to rely on an environmental impact statement drawn up by the Navy, it has an obligation to submit it for public review and then approve it.
