‘The Case for Helmets’ for Motorcyclists

If you’re not going to teach drivers to watch for motorcycles, then at least let me have the freedom and ability to watch out for the drivers. Don’t put my head in a box that restricts hearing, peripheral vision and neck movement. Motorcycle riders in helmets tend not to look around, instead relying on mirrors. Helmetless riders tend not to rely on mirrors and take that extra look and avoid the accident. Three-quarters of the time it’s the car that violates the bike’s right-of-way or just runs into the cyclist. Most motorcycle injuries are below the waist--the legs and feet caught between bike and car.

Yes! California should safeguard its motorcyclists, by educating drivers and listening to experienced riders. Who knows more about surviving on a bike than someone who has done it for years?

I have been riding bikes for 40 years and have never worn a helmet of my own free will. I feel they are unsafe.
