Denver’s Elitch Theater Company will not renew its lease on the 97-year-old Elitch Gardens Theater, considered the oldest summer theater in the country. Christopher Kirkland, producing director, said patrons’ complaints about the site have increased, and the building is “decrepit” and “continually neglected.” He also blamed a poor economy and an early season cancellation by actress Bernadette Peters. Kirkland said the company plans to reopen and will spend the coming year looking for a site.
