An 18-month-old Sacramento boy died in a fire that started when his 8-year-old sister was playing with a cigarette lighter. Police Sgt. Larry Chavez said a window shade caught fire in the living room and the fire spread swiftly through the house. He said the girl managed to call 911 for help and then ran across the street to a neighbor’s house, but by the time neighbors and firefighters arrived, George Voorhies was dead in his crib. Chavez said the children were in the house alone because their father was at work and their mother had gone to a nearby school to do some work. The mother, Anne Voorhies, was arrested on suspicion of child neglect.
