The World : Italy Convicts End Revolt
Six armed convicts barricaded inside a prison on the Italian island of Elba for more than a week released all 28 of their hostages and surrendered, an official statement said. The surrender ended Italy’s longest prison revolt in at least 15 years. The inmates, all convicted killers, barricaded themselves inside an infirmary in the cliff-top prison after seizing the hostages. The convicts, including neo-fascist Mario Tuti, were armed with two pistols, knives and explosives. They demanded a helicopter to leave the island and had threatened to massacre the hostages if the 1,000 heavily armed police ringing the prison tried to storm the infirmary.
