Lynwood : Parks Grants Total $360,000
Five separate competitive government and private grants amounting to more than $360,000 have been awarded to the Lynwood Recreation and Parks Department.
The largest grant of $147,800 is from the state Department of Housing and Community Development for a citywide graffiti eradication program. The next largest grant of $140,000, also from the state, is for renovation and remodeling of the city gymnasium.
The department also received a $36,000 award which will be used to help operate the Natatorium, the city’s indoor swimming facility, on a year-round basis.
A $16,000 state award was given to the city’s senior citizens program. The program for residents age 50 and older will be expanded.
A $20,340 grant was received from the Amateur Athletic Foundation, which was formed to parcel out the huge surplus generated by the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games to youth organizations in Southern California. The Recreation and Parks Department is using the money to hire a coach for a track and field club for local youths.
All of the programs receiving money will be supervised by the Recreation and Parks Department, said Jim Given, recreation supervisor.
