An environmental group has taken the first step in setting up a “sanctuary forest” by purchasing a 160-acre parcel of old-growth trees near the Humboldt and Mendocino County line. The group put down $50,000 to purchase the land. Randall Snodgrass, a leader of the group, said it is backing passage of a state parklands bond initiative to finance purchase of 500 additional acres. The measure would authorize $776 million in general obligation bonds.
