Golden Gloves Headquarters Will Move
The Golden Gloves Assn. of America’s franchise holders have agreed to move the amateur boxing organization’s headquarters to Louisville from Albuquerque, N.M.
The office would move by early next year to renovated offices in Louisville Gardens with a dedication in April 1989 during the national Golden Gloves tournament at the downtown facility. The annual tournament would be in Louisville thereafter.
Community leaders have pledged to raise a minimum of $6 million for the effort, with most of that expected to come from national corporations that will be offered exclusive advertising rights for products in the 31 cities with franchises.
“It’s a go. The move is going to happen,” Stan Gallop, executive director, said. He said all but two of the franchise holders agreed to the move, and the other two could not be reached.
Although the move would create only about six jobs, officials who have worked on the project said they hope it will open up a new tourism market and turn Louisville into the international hub of amateur boxing.
