The San Diego City Council on Tuesday unanimously agreed to give the County of San Diego $360,700 to provide 192 additional beds for one year at Las Colinas County Jail for women in Santee.

The payment was part of an agreement between city and county officials to install three portable buildings at the overcrowded facility, and it is a one-time expenditure. The county has agreed to match the $360,000 and foot the bill for anything else that is needed for the temporary beds, an aide to Councilwoman Gloria McColl said.

The city’s payment was inspired, in part, by complaints to McColl and other city officials about the resurgence of prostitution along El Cajon Boulevard, which runs through McColl’s district.

Community leaders had complained that prostitutes arrested by police were out on the streets almost immediately because there was no jail space to hold them. Responding to the complaints, McColl and Lockwood suggested helping the county pay for the temporary quarters, which are to be used until Aug. 31.
